Emerging from the Rubble is a collaborative endeavor between Fauve Alice, Isabel Castro Jung, Jasmine Shigemura Lee &  Rosalind Wilson, offering a space to rethink our relationship with insects.

Insects are often a source of fear and disgust, living in the cracks and gaps of the world we have built. They swarm around us in uncontrolled masses and exist in time frames that disrupt linear understandings of life. What can we learn from this big other?

The four artists will collaborate in turning the Staffordshire Street gallery into a changing environment that will be activated by performers and visitors alike. We will focus on species of insects found in the local area as starting points to explore themes of time and speculative futures.

[Exploring the contradiction in pace of slow and specific evolution of environmentally adapted creatures with the accelerated speed and  ephemeral conditions of the current material environment. How does a bug cope with a crisp packet?]

Across the 10 days  the content of the exhibition will morph and change as different people enter the space. There will be workshops held with groups of local children to create artwork, a cabaret of performances exploring insect behaviours and performative actions throughout the duration of the show that will all contribute to the changing landscape of the exhibition.

We will explore the songs and vibrations of insects, some inaudible to human ears or intelligible to current human understanding. We will explore camouflage: the performative action of blending into a surrounding environment, and escaping attack. We will explore illusion: the moment of transformation, in which the body simultaneously appears and disappears. We will explore transformation and human-insect hybridity.

Emerging from the Rubble is an exercise in observing the collaborative behaviors of insects to collectively produce something greater than any participant could make alone.
